Today, I’m excited to share my recipe for homemade margarita mix. It’s insanely easy to make (with only two ingredients, plus water!).
The difference between homemade margarita mix and something you buy at the store is kind of insane, though. Sometimes the store-bought mixes can be syrupy and gross. Homemade tastes SO much fresher.

Totally worth the effort! Here’s the quick little video I made showing exactly how to make your own margarita mix and margarita.
Homemade Margarita Mix Ingredients:
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup fresh lime juice (about 10 limes)
Squeeze the lime juice into a bowl or measuring cup. I love this handy tool for juicing lemons and limes.
Heat the water and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Let the mixture cool a bit before adding in the lime juice. Mix together and pour into a glass carafe or mason jar.
Refrigerate the mix for up to two weeks.
How to Make a Homemade Margarita:
Ingredients:
1 shot tequila
1/2 shot Triple Sec
homemade margarita mix
ice
Add 1 shot of tequila and half a shot of triple sec to a margarita glass (or these cactus glasses!). Add the ice and fill the rest of the glass with homemade margarita mix.
It’s super simple! Don’t forget to salt your rim and try a lime-flavored salt if you’d like.
This homemade margarita mix is perfect for parties. You can easily tweak the proportions to make a large or small batch depending on how many you’ll be serving!
You could even use a cast iron pot like this when making a bigger batch of mix.
Can I Make Different Flavors of Margarita Mix?
Yes! You can make different variations of this recipe by using grapefruit juice, orange, or cranberry juice instead of lime juice. You can even make your own strawberry margarita mix.
So many options! Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Can this mix be for a frozen margarita machine?
Hi! I haven’t tried this recipe in a margarita machine, but if your machine recommends using a mix I say go for it! 🙂
Love this recipe! We usually go with a lime/lemon mix and the taste is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
I made this. So good! It lasted awhile in my fridge and was just as good as the day I made it!!
Thank you Tammy!!!! 🙂
One of my most frequently used recipes for sure! It’s so fresh and wonderful. You can sub some of the citrus for lemons or blood oranges for a twist!
Love this recipe so much!
WOW!! 🤩 This was delicious! Don’t think I can go back to the mix from the store now. It was so fresh and crazy easy.
Had friends over and served it with Half Baked Harvest’s Crispy chicken tinga tacos. Winner all around!!
Love your mix!!!
Have you tried this with a mix of lime and some other fruit like blood oranges?
I really like fresh margarita mix too. But I love using Agave instead of simple syrup. It a easy mix with fresh limes and taste great. TY for posting this
This was so easy and delicious! First time I made it was the best margarita I have ever tasted. I only had 2 limes, so juiced them first and adjusted the recipe to match by half on proportions. It made 2 very generous glasses.
OH.MY.GOSH!!!!!! Made this today and can hardly wait for happy hour. I think a splash of it would also work well with gin and tonic….just sayin. Thanks for the inspiring ideas.
This recipe is GREAT!
My neighbors and I enjoy margaritas on the weekends.
Our favorite recipe uses a very specific mix you can only find at one place (other mixes don’t cut it).
Well, the one place that carries it (a whole sale club which I won’t name) will often just stop carrying it, then will start again without notice. So last time they stopped carrying it, I took matters in my own hands and came across your recipe. PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Making our own mix tastes BETTER than the store bought one and allows us to tweak things.
Thank you for sharing!
Hiya, This looks delicious. Any guidance on how to make a frozen one? I see great recipes for other Frozen flavors on your site (yum) but wondering how much ice to add to this one as too much can dilute the flavor. Thank you 🙂
I’m not sure how this is not just called limeade? Lol I’ll definitely try it though ?
My picky 5 year old only drinks kool aid and he LOVED this recipe! So easy and tasty
Just made this, I don’t normally drink mixed drinks like this but it was absolutely excellent. Easy to do and very refreshing.
Do you think I could sub the sugar with erythritol? It measures 1:1 with sugar and is noN glycemic….
You should try it! We’ve never tested that, but I’d love to hear how it works out for you! XX
This doesnt sound like it makes very much. 1 cup of water cooked down ? If you wnted a pitcher full how much would you mix of water and sugar
Thanks for the recipe. I’ve always just used Bacardi frozen mix but there has been none of that in Pandemic period. It will be nice to have margaritas back in our lives starting tomorrow. It is the only alcoholic beverage my 88 year old mother-in-law will drink.
One minor point—you must be using some kind of pigmy or dehydrated limes. I got 16 ounces of juice from just 8 average size limes.
This is now our go-to margarita mix. We refuse to buy store-bought now that we’ve tried this.
